OUTFOXED: An Excerpt

Today I thought I'd post an excerpt from Outfoxed. I love the Cougar Falls books, and the catamount pride is full of pranksters and oddballs. A mix of cats, foxes, a bear and a wolf all living together. Makes for some lively scenes. And it was about time Burke's younger brothers had their stories told. This one belongs to Grady. Enjoy. :)

An Excerpt

Continuing not even a quarter mile down the dirt road to his place, he slowed when he saw Gabby approaching from the opposite direction. She must have been out for a walk. The direction from which she came was nothing but grassy fields and a stream that cut through the property. A few trees bordered the area, but the larger grouping of them sat behind Gabby’s cabin. He faced mountains when he looked out his back window. She saw trees.

Her attention seemed fixed on his cabin. Had she been going to meet him?

And then she saw him in the truck and hurried toward him. At the same time, his cell phone rang.

“Yeah?” he answered it and slowed the truck to a crawl.

Dean spoke in a rush, breathing hard. “Oh man. Look bro, you’ll thank me for this later. Just play along with whatever Gabby says, okay?”

“Huh?”

“Gotta go.” Dean hung up.

Grady disconnected and put the phone on the seat next to him. When he reached his cabin, he parked the truck. He took a step outside and had just slammed the door closed when Gabby plastered herself against his chest.

“Whoa.”

Her strong arms wrapped around his waist, and he felt every inch of her curves, from her full breasts to her long, toned legs. Good Christ, was he dreaming?

His erection rose and refused to quit.

She drew in a soft breath when she felt it but didn’t move. What to make of that?

“Not that this isn’t great, but Gabby? You okay, honey?”

She squeezed him hard once, then let him go. “Could you walk me home? There’s something I need to say to you, and it would be best away from here.”

Confused but knowing his idiot brother had something to do with this, he let Gabby lead him away from his cabin. She held his hand, her smaller, softer fingers entwined with his. Dope that he was, he felt waves of affection roll through his body. Her scent whispered to him of belonging, sex and hunger. He wanted to purr and had to forcibly concentrate to stop himself.

“What’s going on?” he asked when he could catch his breath. A loud moan and a male bellow of satisfaction broke the quiet around them.

He stopped in his tracks. The sound had come from his cabin.

“No, no. Come on.” Gabby increased her pace, all but dragging him with her as the moans continued—noises magnified by Ac-taw hearing. By the sound of her, the female making those sexy noises was having a damn fine time.

They reached Gabby’s cabin but didn’t stop there. She pulled him inside and closed the door behind them.

Curious as to the changes she’d made in the short time she’d been living there, he glanced around and smiled. “This place looks like you.” The comfortable, three-bedroom cabin had a generous bathroom, a small kitchen and a living room with a fireplace. Simple yet functional. But under Gabby’s hands, the place shone like a designer showplace. Light fabrics framed the two large windows in the front of the cabin. The kitchen had been done in white and apple green, which made the whole space look bigger. His own kitchen had dark, wooden cabinets and looked tiny.

Her living room had a few throw rugs, a comfy-looking couch and a small television. Neat and organized, the whole cabin even smelled fresh. Did the woman not know how to make a mess?

He turned to tell her how much he liked it when he noted her sober expression.

“What’s wrong? It’s okay, you can tell me.” He needed to ease her worry, to make everything better. She felt like his to protect, as if he’d already claimed her. Knowing something bothered her made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

“Grady, I think we should sit.” She sat on the couch and patted the space next to her.

Not one to let an opportunity go by, he hurried to join her.

“There’s something you should know.” She paused and bit her lower lip. So f**king sexy, those lips. He’d seen them wrapped around his c**k in dreams for months. “It’s about someone you care about.”

He wondered if she’d been with a lot of guys. To his shock, he didn’t care. So long as she was only with him now. No one else but him from here on out. His gaze fell to her breasts. Would she be rosy or pale pink? Would she be sensitive there when he sucked her?

“It’s Joy. She’s found someone else.”

“Joy, right.” God, he could almost taste her. He imagined kissing those breasts, then licking the smooth skin down her belly to her p**sy. Man, he’d—

“Grady, listen to me,” she snapped. “This isn’t easy, and I shouldn’t have to be the one to tell you this. But Joy isn’t yours anymore.”

“Not mine. What?” He stared at her, not sure what the hell she meant. “What are you saying?”

She blew out a breath. “I know you and Joy have real feelings for each other. That you were going to ask her to consider staying instead of moving on to Oregon.” She swallowed hard. “Dean told me all about it. But Grady, I think she’s found someone else.”

He wondered what the hell kind of story Dean had fabricated. And why.

Gabby patted his knees. Commiserating with him about Joy?

“So you’re saying Joy isn’t mine anymore. If she ever was,” he said slowly. She nodded. He started to piece the puzzle together. “That moaning I heard earlier, from my cabin.”

Gabby blinked and he saw the sheen of tears. “That was her. She was probably waiting to tell you herself, but then he came.”

“Who?”

She took his hand in hers and squeezed. “Just remember, family is what matters in the end.”

He suddenly understood. “Oh hell. Dean and Joy?” He could just imagine how Burke and Miles would feel knowing Dean was screwing Joy. The feisty little cat had made a few overtures toward him the last time she’d been in town, but as a joke. He’d never thought of her as anything other than a little sister, and she’d never treated him as anything more than a platonic friend. Trust Dean to hook up with her. And only a few days after the tourist in waders. His brother was turning into a whore.

“Are you okay?”

“I don’t know.” How the hell was Dean hooking up with Joy supposed to help him? Then again, Gabby was finally paying him real attention. Touching him, holding his hand. Okay, right. The sympathy card. It had worked for Dean before.

Maybe Dean wasn’t the dumbest one in the family after all.

Tick Tock... Jericho Junction is Close

Yep. Just one more week--six days actually--until the first of my two March releases comes out. So I thought I'd give some teasers.

I'll start with Jericho Junction, releasing from Total E-Bound on Monday, March 12th. It's the third in the Mark of Lycos series, but the book stands on its own. Whether you've read the prior two or not, you'll be able to understand and enjoy this one. It's a m/m/f romance between a bear shifter, a demon, and a cat shifter.

Jericho is the beta of the Great Wolf Clan, a clan that now includes more than just wolves as its members. Wolves, bears, foxes, and even those annoying cats can be part of the clan. But when murder happens in the forest, and shifters are targeted, it's up to Jericho to join forces with the athmae--the demons--to stop a sorceress up to no good.

Here's an excerpt to wet your whistle (and note this is a British publisher, hence the alternate spellings)...

***

Jericho had come upon them at night. And damn if the athmae weren’t some strange-looking bastards, even though he knew them to be quite harmless, at least to shifters. According to Fenris, they only raided human dreams. Their skin was dark at night and pale during daylight. Definitely on the other side of normal.

“Impressive,” Liam’s largest guard noted with a lingering glance down Jericho’s frame. “Most impressive. A bear, you say?”

“I’m here to find a killer,” Jericho said through gritted teeth. Damn athmae. More interested in f*cking than finding out how to defeat the enemy.

“Easy, Jericho.” Liam’s lips twitched. “It’s just that we haven’t been around many bears. My wolf, though large, isn’t nearly as big as you.” By wolf, he meant Anson, Fenris’s twin brother.

“Where is he, by the way?”

Liam sighed. “Getting your partner, who’s just as irritable as you are, I’m sorry to say.”

“Partner?” Jericho had assumed he’d join a hunting party to take down their enemy, provided the athmae could shed some light on who—or what—had been killing shifters.

“Ah, there he is,” another dark-skinned demon said. “Danger walking on two legs.”

Anson walked beside a male surprisingly as large and brawny as Jericho. He had the same night-dark skin as the other athmae, as well as their long white hair and red eyes. The tips of his ears were pointed, and when he spoke to Anson, Jericho caught the flash of sharp fangs. Yet his build appeared more bear-like than demon.

The athmae around him were tall and lean, strong, but not so muscular. Not like this guy.

“Lord Seino.” Liam grinned. His smile widened when the dour-faced demon sighed at him.

“Masterson.” Lord Seino wore a black vest and dark trousers, making him seem almost naked since the colour blended into his skin. Cinched to his waist was a demon bone sword, a weapon that could cleave just about anything in two.

Jericho wondered if Lord Seino ever considered he wore a piece of his brethren’s bone, then wondered if the demon would care. Though Liam’s group seemed to have more than sexual feelings for one another, this creature looked positively malevolent.

Jericho released an involuntary growl, and the male shifted his gaze to him. Pure power enveloped the gathering, and he noticed a few of the other athmae move closer to Liam and Anson.

“Who is this?” The deep voice sent shockwaves through him. An intimidating warrior who shouldered contempt for everyone around him, if Jericho read his frown correctly.

Liam shared a glance with Anson before replying, “Your partner, Jericho. He’s the liaison from the Great Clan Anson was telling you about—”

“Partner? This is intended as amusement?” His disdain made Jericho want to bite him. “A Protector hunts alone. What Kin warrior of any worth needs help from a human?”

“Try bear, *sshole.” Calling Jericho a human was as bad as calling a raptor a chicken. Not done. Not if one wanted to live.

“His name is Jericho Dark Walker,” Liam said softly.

The male opened his mouth to reply but paused. “Dark Walker?”

“Who the f*ck are you?” Jericho was done playing nice with a demon with no manners.

Anson and the other athmae grinned.

The stranger scowled. “I am Lord Seino, Protector of the Seventh Kingdom.”

“Yeah, great. I’m Jericho. Now let’s get moving. We have dead bodies piling up in our forest, Lord Annoying. So if you could take the stick out of your ass, we have an enemy to kill.”

“Oh, well said.” Liam chuckled. When Seino glared at him, he quickly coughed and amended, “About the enemy to kill, of course. We’ll leave you two to get acquainted. Sorry, but the Harvest Festival is in full swing. We have our work to get back to, and you have yours. Lord Seino, Mother sends regards to Master Fel.”

Seino nodded stiffly. “I shall give him your respects.”

Anson waved to Jericho. “Good luck. You’re going to need it.” His glance at Seino spoke volumes.

The prince and his group left as one, disappearing into the night as if they’d never been. The moon chose that moment to rise overhead, illuminating Jericho’s companion. Good night, but this male had power. Jericho could smell it on him. Unlike the sexual vibes he’d sensed from the males accompanying Liam, this demon felt cold, controlling, demanding.

Another growl eddied in his breast. A need to show the demon his place rose up out of nowhere.

“Hmm.” Seino circled him, inspecting him like a prized stallion.

“Look, I’m not exactly crazy about partnering up with you either. I’m here to find out how to kill something that needs killing. We don’t have to be friends to do it.”

“Friends? An interesting concept.”

Ignoring the male’s feigned interest, Jericho snapped, “So are we starting in your neck of the woods or mine?” The lure of tranquillity in the Great Forest sounded like heaven the more time he spent around Lord Seino. No fighting, dull sex with she-bears or she-wolves, and more of the same everyday awaiting his beck and call.

Or he could spend time with Lord Attitude.

He paid no attention to his racing heart and the excitement in his breast, and told himself he reacted to the thrill of the hunt. Not some obnoxious demon with arrogance issues.

“Should I assume you are the best your shifters have to offer?”

“Assume whatever the hell you want. I’m going to track down this monster and kill it. With or without your help.” Jericho marched into Seino’s personal space and met him nose to nose.

Seino didn’t blink. But something changed between them. A subtle sense of acceptance, maybe? In any case, Seino gave him a nod but didn’t back away. So Jericho did, trying not to feel as if he’d lost ground by doing so.

“We should go to my land, so you can see what we’re dealing with there.” Seino blinked at him, his red eyes like ruby pools of promise.

Of promise? What the hell?

“Shall we go?” Seino held out a hand.

“What?”

“Grab my hand and hold on. Our portal to the Seventh Kingdom is difficult to traverse. But you need to see what we’re up against, Dark Walker.”

Jericho reluctantly put his hand in the large palm of the demon’s. It was cool to the touch…at first. But as he stared into Seino’s eyes, the demon gripped him tighter. Heat blossomed and travelled throughout his body, centring embarrassingly in his crotch. He didn’t have the nerve to see if Seino was similarly affected.

“Hold on, Dark Walker, and prepare to travel.”

The world changed in the blink of an eye.

The Ugly, Ugly Past

Back in 2005, my first story released. Blackthorne's Light, a sexy novella about a vampire with a soul. Mind you, this was back before vampires became the new black. There was no Twilight, no push for sexy vampires to take over the romance market. Not yet. I was on the cusp and just beginning. My story was part of an anthology called Dark and Dangerous.

Years have passed, I'm no longer with my first publisher, and I acquired my rights back. So I thought I'd re-release my story with a new cover and some light edits for a fun little .99 story.

Oh. My. Gosh. The manuscript was so ugly. Not a quick fix at all. I saw a ton of...purple prose. I mean, the kind that made me wonder what the hell I'd been smoking when I wrote it. Don't get me wrong. I love the story idea and the characters, but some of the lovey-dovey crap was WAY over the top.

So I went through and stripped all of the annoying parts. I fixed dialogue tags. I tightened the writing. And I rewrote the ending, because it needed it. A lot of work, but I'm not embarrassed to put it back out there now. Whew.

Here's a short excerpt from Blackthorne's Light. Enjoy!

Dara and her friend Sue are checking out a hot new nightclub for use in Dara's next article. (Dara writes for a woman's online magazine.)

They passed through into a room so dark, Dara had to stop to allow her eyes to adjust to the lack of lighting. Then the flick of a desklamp illuminated an immaculately organized desk.

“Oh, right. Hold on.” John moved away from them and raised a dimmer switch, so that the overhead lighting made everyone visible. Sue gasped and Dara caught her breath at the sight of the man behind the desk.

Holy mother, but if a man could be more beautiful, she’d never seen him.

“Sue, Dara, I’d like you to meet the man behind the mystery, Trey Blackthorne.”

Blackthorne rose to his feet and moved around the desk to greet them. His eyes, dark and piercing, seemed to absorb their every detail, as if he stared at them from Lucifer’s vantage.

He towered over Sue, and Dara put him at roughly six-four or five.

“Pleased to meet you,” he said in low, courtly tone as he kissed the back of Sue’s limp hand. Sue finally snapped her mouth closed, gave him a smile, and stepped back, as if intimidated by the man’s larger-than-life presence.

Not that Dara could blame her. He had looks, a body that appeared as if it never left the gym, and a charisma about him that screamed power. His essence of spirit exuded a deep warmth that both comforted and alarmed. Fanciful words from a writer who wanted nothing more than to put this guy front and center in her fantasies.

Oh man. Get it together, girl.

He turned to Dara and stiffened for no more than a split second. No one seemed to notice, but Dara felt his surprise. And how she sensed that, she had no idea.

Trey kissed her hand as well, and a burning heat raced through her body from where his firm lips caressed her skin.

“Dara, a lovely name.” His gaze blazed with need before he banked the emotion behind a polite façade.

Had she imagined that, or had the hottest man she’d ever met just given her a solid once-over?

John mentioned Dara’s purpose for being in the club, and Trey nodded. Yet his stare never left her face.

“I’m intrigued.” Trey spared a warm smile for Sue. “I hope you’re enjoying yourself? John hasn’t been too chatty?”

“Oh no. He’s been a perfect host.” Sue rubbed John’s shoulder with an intimate touch that told Dara she’d need another ride home tonight.

Trey smiled, and Dara’s heart stopped. Man, what must it be like to go through life that beautiful? Would anyone ever see through that polish to the real him?

He blinked at her in surprise before refocusing on John again. “John, why don’t you entertain Sue while I answer Dara’s questions. I’m sure she'll have many.”

“You can say that again.” She smiled at him, wanting nothing more than to never stop staring. And then a frisson of that psychic sense that had been her burden for years swelled, and her overwhelming fascination with Trey’s looks faded. She blinked several times and took a calming breath. “Yeah, I’d love to talk to you.”

Trey nodded. “Sounds good. John, feel free to give Sue the VIP treatment. Everything’s on the house.”

“Awesome. Talk to you later, Dara.” Sue waved and left with John without a backwards glance.

Dara watched her and John go with a bit of unease, now completely alone with a stranger that made her insides burn at his touch.

Get Direction...PLEASE

Have you ever just had one of those days? It's Friday. I should be ecstatic to see the weekend. sigh. I'm not.

Unexpected bills, unexpected chores, and unexpected edits have turned my smiling face sour. And I keep procrastinating my work. Hence my post.

It's ironic, really, because last night I went out with a friend of mine for cocktails. I can't tell you how long it's been since I've done that. I have kids, so most of my nights are confined to the house and reruns of The Regular Show. And while I find Mordecai and Rigby hilarious, I can only take so much of Cartoon Network or that &#@!! Pokemon before my brain starts to decay.

So last night I sat and had intelligent adult conversation with a writer friend at a sushi bar. The Cosmo was delicious, as were the happy hour snacks. Our discussion of course turned to writing, and we talked about how hard we work and our schedules...

Fast forward to Friday at noon, and I'm still staring at my edits and scratching my head. My thoughts immediately race--not to work--to the fact that Starbucks' new Blonde roast isn't bad but still not as good as Raven's Brew. Did my phone beep? Man, there's still snow on the ground. Gee, I wonder what movies are soon coming out. I should look at some trailers. Oh, and I need more coffee. So I must get up and LEAVE MY COMPUTER AGAIN.

Man, I hate a lack of direction.

That's actually the hardest part of writing, in my opinion. Forcing yourself to sit down and put the words to paper/screen/pick your medium. It's easy to talk about writing or imagine your book finished and quite another to type the friggin' words.

It always cracks me up when I meet someone, they ask what I do, I answer, "I'm a writer," to which they reply,"Wow, me too. I have a children's book I'm planning to write." Or some other work that the person has been thinking about completing. Really? Because as fascinating as it is to meet someone who writes, for me, if you're just thinking about it, you're not a writer. Gee, I just thought about what it would have been like to attend medical school. Um, I'm not a doctor.

And I'm not poking fun (okay, I am) but if as many people had actually written what they talked about, maybe they'd see that writing is in fact difficult. And writing romance is as hard as writing literary fiction. Sure, it's different. I'm not after a Pulitzer Prize. In my books, not everyone dies, cries, or experiences tumultuous marriages, incest, grand misunderstandings and death. I'm a romance writer. Happily Ever After--all the way for me. But it's not that easy to think you can write two people having sex and falling in love together and call it entertainment--entertainment other people not related to you will pay money to read.

That billion dollar romance industry that so many people--sadly, men and women--scorn is popular for a reason. Romance readers buy a lot of books, and they want happy endings.

But in order to get a reader to that happy place, the writer (that would be me) needs to tune out the Internet, Twitter, Facebook, the news, Yahoo, etc, and write. Much, much easier said than done. Because the world keeps churning, interesting news continues to happen, and there are way, way too many funny things posted on Facebook and Twitter. Enough to consume 24 hours easily.

So with that said, I'm back to work on my edits and crossing my fingers I'll have them done by the end of the weekend...

Wish me luck, and have a nice Friday.
