Beauty and Her Beasts
A Berserker Mate's Story, 2

Jakob left his pack a hundred years before…to escape his controlling twin. He finally comes home, along with the mate he’s found along the way. Jakob knows having claimed her without Joran may tear their already tempestuous relationship apart, but in order to keep his new mate safe, there is no better place than with his family.

Joran has awaited the day his younger twin would walk through the front door. Seeing Jakob mated, Joran realizes his chance at happiness has been stolen from him. Yet he still feels the incredible pull of the beautiful Kara, even if she can’t be his. His steel-willed control falters for the first time in eons.

Kara is in the middle of this tug of war, her head already a whirlwind from leaving her life behind. Will she be the bridge to bring them together, or rip them further apart?

A Sunday Inspirational Post

You know, I'm really into some of the shows on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network. I was never a huge Oprah fan when she had her talk show. I mean, I liked a lot of her content, but I didn't linger by the TV each day dying to watch the show. But lately at night I'll swing by the channel and see some interesting things.

I like Rosie O'Donnell. She's loud, proud to be who she is, and funny. And her new show where she just talks to people is fantastic. She had one where she interviewed Kathy Griffin, and it was really interesting.

Oprah has a Masters Class, where she interviews famous people with more to their fame than money. She did one on Tony Robbins that was fantastic. And she's got one with Paula Dean and another with Reba McEntire coming up. I love learning about the backgrounds of these people, because most of them came from nothing. How do they climb toward success and handle setbacks? What makes them successful? How did they know what choices to make to get where they are now?

What struck me was an episode I watched last night. It had to do with past guests from her talk show that really spoke to something special, about how to aim high and achieve goals. Envisioning success before you get there, believing in yourself, and never quitting were some of the points I took from the show.

I think that's probably what stuck by me most. In a career like writing, where people seem to say no more than they say yes, you're often left wondering if you're any good at your job. I've worked in the military, for salary, and hourly (when younger). When you're in a job where the pay is fixed and the work clear cut, it's a lot less subjective. You do your reports, you're successful. Come in on time every day and finish your projects, you're guaranteed pay.

But in the world of writing, what one reader likes another hates. Editors take on books other editors have rejected. And what's published at times delights and at other times confounds me. I just reread an unpublished book I'd written a year ago. Now I like to think most of my work is stellar. But I admit some of it's problematic. Plots or characters have weak points I wished I'd seen earlier. But this book I reread, it's good. I mean really good. It's also been passed over by agents. It's gotten more nibbles of interest than any of my other works, but still, no takers.

So I have to decide. Do I start sending it out to other agents I haven't targeted yet? Do I avoid the agents and target publishers? Do I publish it myself? Do I write the next three books in the series or leave it at book one, which is its own story entirely but could be the beginning of a wonderful series? Considering I fell in love with the characters all over again, I'm pretty sure I'm going to write more for the brothers of this wonderful family. But as far as where to send it, I'm still unsure.

It's difficult to constantly push forward after rejection. Every time I hear a no, I'm baffled and crushed. And then something weird balls up inside me and I push harder. I think that's why I know I'll succeed in this business. Because I believe in myself. People have given me nice reviews, stellar reviews, and plainly trashed my books. Everything I write has a measure of something personal in it, because my creativity is me. I'm not my characters and I don't live their lives (unfortunately--grin) but it's my heart and soul poured into every work, so when someone doesn't like it, sure it bothers me. But then, there have been books others have crowed about that I've been unable to finish. So I shrug off the negativity and write the next best book I can.

I've had a few people recently contact me about writing, searching for some advice. It makes me think and it relates to some of those OWN shows I previously mentioned. The key to writing is good storytelling. But the answer to success is about belief in yourself. Because if you don't believe you can succeed, you won't. And this applies to everyone in life, no matter what you do.

This is my Sunday inspirational post. While writing it felt cathartic and reinforced to me just how incredibly wonderful I am, it also made me want to throw up for being so damn positive and Pollyanna-like. I promise not to do this again for a long time. Enjoy the last bit of freedom from your Sunday before you're dragged kicking and screaming to work tomorrow. (There, that sounded more like me.)

Tax Hell

I can't believe it's been a week and a half since I've blogged! Must be because I'm stuck in tax hell...

sigh. Being in between projects isn't always the best for me, because I fall off the writing wagon. I forget deadlines and the act of sitting down to write and goof off. Well, not any more. After learning I'll probably need to donate my left lung, an eyeball, and a kidney to pay for last year's income, I'm quietly going nuts while planting my ass on my chair and type, type, typing away.

I'm just hoping my accountant can do something creative with numbers and make my payment go way, way down. Self-employment is great, and it's a bitch. Especially when the government is holding out its greedy little hands. So I might incorporate, or I might not. Either way, the notion doesn't help me for last year. If I could offer a piece of advice? If you're doing fairly well writing, and you're happy with your income that has a few pretty zeroes on the end it, see an accountant BEFORE the year ends. Soon as you start making that green, actually. It'll save you in the long run.

Now, I really must write!!

Good News Wednesday

Man. After months of my publisher duking it out with Barnes and Noble, I'm happy to say Gunnar's Game and Grayson's Gamble are finally at the Barnes and Noble nook store. I don't know why it's taken so long getting the books there, and I know my publisher has been struggling to put not only my books on the distributor's e-shelves, but other authors' as well. So, good news for those of you asking, you can now more easily download Dawn Endeavor stories to your nook.

And on another note, Grayson's Gamble is/was (if it's still there by the time you read this) #1 in erotic romance at Fictionwise.

It's a good news Wednesday. :)

Happy Dance and Happy V-Day!

Right Wolf, Right Time, is now in the hands of my editor. For the moment, I only have one outstanding manuscript left to write for this year. I do hope to remedy that with more work, but knowing I'm close to finishing what I owe my editors is so very, very satisfying.

Which is not to say that I don't have a lot of other stories planned, just not scheduled in stone. However, I have the next two weeks to free-wheel a few thoughts before I get started on my next project. Time for some Norse gods, methinks...

Smiles.

Oh, and Happy Valentine's Day. I almost forgot. What was I thinking? For all of you in love with love, a special tribute. A man who appears to be thinking about love. And if we're very, very lucky, his towel just might fall off while he's pondering cupid's mighty arrows. (Although I've been staring for twenty minutes and nothing's happened. I'll give it some more time.)

Twitter--Evil, Yes, It Is

So far today I've written a whopping 2000 words. And yes, I'm using sarcasm. Why have I not accomplished my set goal? Because lately, my attention span is that of a gnat's. There's Facebook, Twitter, a new release, television, and coffee. Yes, I'm even blaming coffee for distracting me, because I have to get off my fat ass to grab a new cup when the one I'm nursing goes empty.

sigh

But most of all, I blame Twitter. There are way too many good feeds and interesting news there. Articles from Cracked.com, which "crack" me up time and time again. Ellen's deal with JC Penny's and hate-mongering women who think 40000 equals 1million. The Business Rusch, an excellent blog about the publishing industry from a woman who's been in the know for over twenty years...and etc.

Ack! My story needs work, and I'm staring at a smaller screen of Twitter! I'd write more, but now I'm out of coffee. Yep. Time to caffeinate. Maybe that will save my Wednesday... But oh, wait, I'm leaving my seat again.

It's here! FORTUNE'S FAVOR is now available from Loose Id.

Holy Crap, It's Almost Here!

Time flies. It really does. Seems like just a few minutes ago I was doing edits after edits on Fortune's Favor, which releases tomorrow from Loose Id. In actuality, I was working on edits for this story back in December.

Odd how I got through that story without much fuss, but my last manuscript gave me fits. I had days where I'd just stare at my computer monitor and wonder if a hammer would shatter the screen or split it in half. Yeah, that kind of story. Yet I pulled it together, forced myself to write through the hard parts, and ended up loving it at the end. So weird.

Some stories are easy. My current WIP, Right Wolf, Right Time, is aces. My hero knows what he wants, the heroine's character is solid, and the conflict unfolded for these two, mentally, while I wrote the previous Cougar Falls book. Now I just need to get on the stick and finish it. I figure if I work hard enough, I can finish the book and treat myself to Underworld by Friday. I've just gotta know if the vamps and werewolves will ever work together to thwart those pesky humans.

Happy Monday.

A Top Pick

Well, it's Friday. So I thought I'd share a great review for Grayson's Gamble.

A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW
| Reviewed by: Greendragon

If life is like a box of chocolates then Marie Harte’s Circs Series is the Godiva Chocolate in any Paranormal/Fantasy, Ménage reader’s library.

Grayson Belle and his partner Sebastian Decker are both Circs working for the government assigned to hunt down rogue and mutant Circs. Gray wants out of his partnership with Bas. Bas is a newbie Circ, he was made a Circ against his will unlike Gray whose whole family were born Circs. Gray is having trouble with his feelings when it comes to Sebastian. Bas has never been through a mating heat like other made Circs, but with his feelings growing towards Gray that looks like it may change. And before either one can sort through their feelings they are given a new assignment….hunt down and kill a rogue mutant named Al Ross.

Both Gray and Bas are going to have a whole new set of problems once they meet Al.

This book is another wonderful story in the Circs series. I have read and loved each and every one of them. Although it can be read by itself I would suggest reading the rest of the series.

You Have to Read This

Of course I think it's funny, because I wrote it. But at Here Be Magic today, I blogged...wait for it... 10 Realities You'll Never See in a Romance. Check it out and have a laugh. And feel free to add the ones I missed. :)

Grayson's Gamble at ARe

Grayson's Gamble is now available at All Romance eBooks!

Grayson Belle is one in a million. Unlike the government’s manufactured Circs -- the nation's warriors who’ve been mutated by the government into men who can shift form -- Gray was born with the ability to shapeshift and has a heightened sense of telepathy. But lately, his world has gone to hell. He’s prepared to throw in the towel after his current mission. He’s seriously messed up, lusting after his irritating partner, whom he’s not even sure he likes. And then the rogue Circ he’s been sent to kill turns his heart inside out and his resolve to nothing. He’s seriously losing his edge, because he wants to mark both Circs as his own. But if he does, what will that mean to the future he’s mapped out for himself?

He’ll have to gamble on his instincts to ignore what his head is telling him. Sometimes being rational means less than nothing if the heart isn’t happy. And Gray will be damned if he’ll let himself lose at love. Now he and his partner just have to convince one stubborn female to take that same chance.

Flight of Fancy...Check

Yes! I just mailed off my newest manuscripts, Flight of Fancy, to my editor at Loose Id. It's a steamy m/m psychic romance. Hurray! Now I have a day to relax before I have to finish up my next project, a fun shapeshifter about a stubborn wolf in a pride of lions. :) No rest for the wicked, er, weary. haha Whew...
